Lockdown and the Women Safety
The recent pandemic Covid-19 has created chaos worldwide ,millions of people are suffering from it and the number is accelerating everyday and when it comes to India we see numbers getting double every 4.1 days as compare to previous 7 days.India took preventive majors right from January and was successful in preventing this at the beginning but after the recent incident that happened in Markaz has left everyone stunned.
Govt is trying every possible measure to intensify the tracing of infected patients and also is coordinating with State Govts,NGOs ,Army,Ncc,NSS and different private sector organizations ,startups actively.
No doubt this 21 days lockdown is having a huge impact on the economy but there's no other alternative to fight this disease at this point of time also people have become jobless, homeless.
But what's most concerning in the midst of this pandemic in India is that we are not only fighting the pandemic but we have started fighting on the name of gender ,religion, caste and class during this lockdown.
And its evident from the recent report which is released by the National Commission For Women which is a Statutory body of the GOI .
Here's what NCW has to say
1.It has recorded more than twofold rise in gender based violence during the lockdown period.
2.It also argued that lockdown has left many people jobless, uncertain over salaries, in forced isolation and in stressed households which have resulted in a steep rise in violence against women .
3.The total complaints rose from 116 in the first week of March to 257 in the final week of March.
4.Rape or attempt to rape rose sharply from 2 to 10.
5.Domestic violence increased from 30 to 69 over the same comparative period.
6.Police apathy towards women has increased almost threefold as the police are busy enforcing the lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19
7.Article 21 of the constitution states Right to live with Dignity but when we see cases rising upto 77 from 35 ,then such cases should pertain to discrimination on the basis of gender ,class or caste or all the three combined.
8.These cases might be a fragment of the actual number as many women will not be able to reach out due to various reasons.
Possible reason can be that women are not able to reach out because of restrictions on movement as well as lack of privacy within homes.Women need privacy and certainty that will not be discovered by their family but that becomes impossible in the presence of the entire house.
What needs to be done ???
India can use France model where it announced that it would pay for 20,000 hotel booking and contribute €1million to organizations that fight domestic abuse as well as set up assistance points at supermarkets and pharmacies.
It's even more concerning that when the Lockdown period will over ,will it be a same case as it was before 25March ??
No! India is going to learn many lessons from this, like making medical institutions more strong ,research based and efficient so that in future we could fight pandemic like COVID-19 easily.
Need for more social and religious reform so that the clergies at this point of time will not act as a preacher of hatred but act as a catalyst for better coordination.
More saftey measures for women not only outside the home but inside their home also so that during any emergency in future they dont become victims of any kind of violence.
Ensuring better supply chains
Mock drills in schools to aware children and their families about how to tackle any emergency like situations .
These measures are just a few drops in the ocean but it will work if implemented properly and efficiently.
Let's hope that India will emerge as a champion once again and lest not forget to say thanks to those who are at the front fighting for us.
